What is Elephant?
Elephant is Israel's largest organization of independent technical and marcom writers. The acronym for the group's original name, Yokneam Forum of Technical Writers, is פי"ל or elephant. Like the elephant, this organization has left a large footprint within the Israeli technical writing community.
Why Elephant (פי"ל)?
Elephant began as a small group of technical writers that met in Yokneam every month or two to meet and share information on job opportunities, prices and tricks of the trade. Within a short time the others joined from all over Northern and Central Israel and top notch speakers offered to come and speak to the group free of charge. At the meetings independent contractors, technical writing companies, and in-house technical writers all shared information; between meetings members of the group worked together to create an ongoing network. Local industry hosted the first meetings and often took an active part, such as in the meeting held at Dalia. Local industry and later high tech companies throughout Israel soon turned to "the Elephant" to find the technical writers and companies that best meet their needs. Galit Frost clearly describes the elephant like impact the Forum in the feature article of a local Hebrew newspaper.
As the group grew and spread to all parts of Israel it started a salary survey whose results provide technical writers with information that they can use during salary negotiations whose accuracy is similar to that found in expensive salary surveys that only companies could afford. The results of the survey were picked up by The Marker, ynet, and Haaretz.
