As a technical writer and translator, I find that when either of the two professions holds a conference, there are always several “How I Do My Stuff” lectures. Sometimes they can drive you crazy. Then along comes a “How I Do My Stuff” lecture where the lecturer’s stuff resembles your stuff. That kind of lecture, in contrast, is fascinating.

The Israel Translators Association (ITA, www.ita.org.il) held a well-timed seventh annual conference, during the lull between this year’s two February rainstorms. The conference’s opening, on the evening of the 23rd, was preceded by optional, separately charged workshops: “The Internet as a Driver for Your Business,” “Advanced Localization,” “Words in Context” (about the editing of translations), and “Good Time Management.”

Tags:As many of us are contemplating what the downturn in the economy is going to do to us next, it was good to get together to exchange stories, especially humorous ones. Actually we bounced back and forth between funny episodes and the brass-tacks of how best to deal with the current job market (link to photos).

MadCap introduces Flame and the new MudPak updates
March 20 2008
(edited 1 year, 5 months ago)
Tags:The company that brought us the original Robothelp (RH) team recently announced new features of its help authoring tool and accompanying software suite. One of the best features is the one that takes user feedback suggestions and instantly codes them into updates for the next release. MadCap has three other products that are also designed to work either with or without the MudPak suite.
- Reporting which is a new way for you to have live interaction with a user as they work on your documentation. If they don't pay your fees on a timely basis, you can use Feedback to totally mess up their files until they do.
- Blank, the second product, is an easy but powerful single-source print publishing replacement for Adobe Framemaker that has the power to efficiently delete and replace all existing files HTML or other files with new XML based ones, using native XML, native Unicode, and CSS without your having to do any other than click on the appropriate icon. This tool as well allows you to replace client files with blank files until they are current and paid up on your freelancing fee payments.
- The third product, Lingo, is a great tool for localization of content with built-in translation memory. It is the world's first truly XML based, fully integrated Help authoring tool and translation memory system.

Enhance Your Document With Rich Media
February 14 2008
(edited 1 year, 6 months ago)
Tags:Shlomo Perets of MicroType, a leading expert on advanced documentation techniques, gave a 90 minute presentation in Yokneam on how we can enhance our online PDF documents using non-text additions. Specific authoring tools were not discussed, as many of the techniques shown were done directly in the PDF document. It was both eye-opening, as well as practical, to be shown how, often using available resources, we can make our PDF documents so much more effective.

Eitan Reuveni and “Leadership, Success, and Attitude” or “Your Path to Success”
Summary by
We were privileged to meet with Eitan
Reuveni and hear directly from him some of his managerial
tips. Sure, all of us can read what is
posted on the Elephant site, but to hear Eitan and listen to his stories made
it all that much more relevant.
Eitan started the meeting by showing us a picture:
.
He then asked us to call out how many squares we see. As each one of us answered and changed our
estimate learning from others, he was pleased. Eitan showed us how that this interaction is so important: working together
as a group.
Now that we had a group, what makes a good leader? Is a manager a leader? Eitan then asked us
